Syria says it wants out of Lebanon

JERUSALEM (UPI) Syria has advised the United States that it istired of its military role in Lebanon and is looking for a politicalsettlement, a senior U.S. official said Sunday.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said Syrianleaders are trying to write a new constitution and reforms that wouldbe acceptable to all of the warring Moslem and Christian factions inLebanon.

The Syrians are trying to produce an acceptable constitution byMay, when the Lebanese Parliament dissolves, so orderly elections canbe held in the summer, he said.

Syrian leaders believe Lebanon has been a drain on them, theU.S. official said, and they are looking for a quick politicalsettlement that would bring peace and enable them to bring theirtroops home.

Syria peacekeeping troops are currently deployed in Beirut.

The United States and Syria have been developing closer ties inthe past few months, and U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz hasvisited Damascus to try to sell a Middle East peace plan.

State Department officials with Shultz in the Middle East had noofficial comment.
