Rock 'n' Psycho fest will feature classy trash

When I heard the plot line for Russ Meyer's "Faster, Pussycat!Kill! Kill!" - scheduled to play at Club Berlin Sunday - I chuckleddevilishly.

"An all-girl bisexual go-go gang goes on a man-stompingrampage," explained Michael Flores, founder of the Psychotronic FilmSociety. "They go around humiliating and beating up men."

As my giggles continued, Flores expressed mock shock. "We have awomen's board, and every time I describe the plot to them they allstart cheering, much like you did," Flores said. "Personally, I findit degrading to the image of men.

"Are women going to watch films like this and repeat theseactions in their homes?"

Well, maybe not, …

Devil Rays Beat Yanks 9-1 Behind Pena

NEW YORK - Carlos Pena homered twice and Andy Sonnanstine pitched eight innings of two-hit ball against the lethargic New York Yankees, leading the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to a 9-1 rout Friday night.

Carl Crawford capped a huge month with two run-scoring hits, and the surging Devil Rays roughed up an ineffective Phil Hughes to win for the seventh time in eight games. Pena also drew three walks and had his second multihomer game in six days.

Looking hung over from their three-game sweep of rival Boston, the Yankees botched an easy rundown play and mustered only Alex Rodriguez's RBI single in the fourth against Sonnanstine (4-9). After that, the rookie right-hander retired his …

DA: Shooting of would-be robber 6 times was murder

A pharmacist who shot a would-be robber six times was charged with first-degree murder Wednesday, and the prosecutor said only the first shot was justified.

A security video shows two men bursting into the pharmacy May 19 and one of them, 16-year-old Antwun Parker, is shot. Pharmacist Jerome Ersland then is seen chasing the second man outside before he walks past Parker to get a second gun, returns to Parker and opens fire.

District Attorney David Prater said Ersland was justified in shooting Parker once in the head, but went too far when he shot Parker five more times while Parker lay unconscious on the floor.

"It is alleged that Parker was …

Welcome to Key West: Have a beer, watch the storm

KEY WEST, Fla. _ This beautiful small island is like its own country: People don't like to be ordered around, especially when it disrupts commerce. And business here is all about tourism, fishing and drinking.

Major emphasis is placed on the latter. Live and let overly indulge is the way of things, and that applies to men who walk down the main drag with parrots on their head, just for the heck of it, as well as to old timers who congregate on the sidewalk to share morning beers.

Urban development expert Jeb Brugmann talks to Rajiv Rao on hisnew book Welcome to the Urban Revolution. Here are the excerpts.

What is the gist of your book?

Let me talk about it in context to India. In the next 35 years,India will transition from being 70 per cent rural to 50 per centurban. Reality is, the majority of Indians does not have anyinstitutional or capital support to find housing in cities. They dowhat they can on a cash basis within an informal criminal context.

Why is this the case?

India suffers from a post-colonial hangover where centuries-oldlegacy of urban development are ignored. Plus, there are no pathwayswhere citizens at all …

Israeli Police: Suicide Bomber Kills 3

EILAT, Israel - A Palestinian suicide bomber attacked a bakery in this southern Israeli resort town on Monday, killing three other people, police said. It was the first suicide bombing in Israel in nine months and the first ever to hit Eilat, Israel's southernmost city.

A spokesman for Hamas, the radical Islamic group that controls the Palestinian parliament and Cabinet, praised the bombing as a "natural response" to Israeli policies - a position likely to complicate the group's efforts to end a crippling aid boycott imposed by the international community.

Two Palestinian militant groups, Islamic Jihad and the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, claimed joint responsibility for …

Indian vehicle sales up 1.1 percent in April

India's vehicle sales continued to rise in April, growing 1.1 percent from the year before to 165,539 units, while exports surged, according to industry figures released Monday.

Sales of passenger cars rose 4.36 percent, to 135,697 units, while commercial vehicle sales fell 11.25 percent, to 29,842 units, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said.

Two-wheelers outperformed both, with sales rising 13.71 percent, to 700,995 units.

Exports of passenger vehicles rose 33.9 percent, to 29,459 units, while commercial vehicle exports fell 35.9 percent, the group said. Total vehicle exports were up 26.6 percent.

Vehicle sales in India remain minuscule by global standards, but global automakers like General Motors, Ford and Volkswagen have ramped up investments in India hoping to capture some of the fast-expanding market.

Automakers sold just 1.55 million passenger vehicles in India last fiscal year, less than the number of cars sold in China and the U.S. in April alone. But until last year, when tight credit and waning demand began to crimp sales, growth in India had averaged 17.2 percent a year.

Domestic sales began to recover after four months of contraction in February, as banks lowered interest rates and government stimulus measures began to take effect.

Market leader Maruti Suzuki, which makes about half the passenger cars sold in India, said April sales totaled 64,857 vehicles and exports shot up 146.4 percent, to 6,891 vehicles, thanks to exports of the A-Star car to Europe.

Exports were further boosted by Hyundai Motor India, which said domestic sales inched up 3.5 percent in April, to 22,247 units, while exports grew 19.6 percent, to 22,124 units.

Tata Motors, the nation's largest commercial vehicle maker, said domestic commercial vehicle sales grew 9 percent in April, to 22,847 units, the first year over year increase in sales volume since September. Sales of passenger cars slipped 4.1 percent, to 14,615 units, not counting bookings for the ultra-cheap Nano car. Tata, which acquired Land Rover and Jaguar from Ford last year, said this month that it would launch both brands in India by year's end.

"We believe that the upward trend will be confirmed with the auto companies reporting a gradual positive trend in volumes over the next couple of months," Vaishali Jajoo, auto analyst at Mumbai's Angel Broking, said in a recent report.

Child slain in Haiti after family can't pay ransom, police say

Kidnappers executed a 7-year-old boy because his family could not afford to pay US$680 (euro458) in ransom, police said Monday.

The body of Schneider Hervil was found Friday in the town of Cabaret, north of the Haitian capital, about two weeks after abductors snatched him from his family's home, police spokesman Frantz Lerebours told a news conference.

The specific cause of his death was not known, Lerebours said.

The child's family received a phone call from kidnappers demanding US$680 (euro458) for his release, but was unable to raise the cash, he said.

No arrests have been made.

At least 16 kidnappings were reported in Haiti through Nov. 20 this year, down from the nearly 80 reported for the full month of November 2006, U.N. peacekeepers said.

They warned abductions are expected to increase in coming weeks as gangs try to raise money to buy Christmas presents in the impoverished Caribbean nation.

New Test May Help Pinpoint Time of Birth

With a simple test, doctors soon may be able to predict whether apregnant woman will give birth within 48 hours.

The test screens for a protein known as fetal fibronectin thatappears in the vagina of women who are about to deliver, according toa study published recently in the American Journal of Obstetrics andGynecology.

Doctors look for the protein by taking a small sample of mucusfrom the woman's vagina or cervix.

Only 6 percent of women actually deliver on their due date, according to the study's lead author, Dr. Regine Ahner of theUniversity of Vienna in Austria.

"From both a medical and psychological point of view . . .accurate determination of the actual onset of labor and deliverywould be desirable, especially in women who have gone past theirexpected due date," Ahner wrote.

The Austrian researcher and his colleagues suspect that fetalfibronectin is released into a woman's cervix and vagina afterimperceptible uterine contractions begin. The weak contractions maycause fetal tissue to separate from the uterine tissue, releasing theprotein.

The researchers followed the pregnancies of 100 women who hadpassed their due dates, and collected mucus samples from the women tolook for traces of fibronectin.

Within 48 hours after the samples were collected, 41 of thewomen gave birth. Four of these women were excluded from the studybecause they either had a Caesarean section or had labor induced. Ofthe remaining 37 patients, 30 had positive tests for fibronectin, while seven did not.

A total of 59 patients delivered later than 48 hours aftersampling, according to the researchers, and three of these patientswere excluded from the study because they required C-sections. Ofthe remaining 56 patients, 51 had a negative fibronectin test, whilefive produced positive tests.

This means that the test was accurate 86 percent of the timewhen it was positive, and 88 percent of the time when it wasnegative.

Experts in maternal-fetal medicine criticized the study for itsexclusion of the women who needed C-sections or had labor induced. The study does not explain why the women needed those procedures, yetthose factors may have been important to the study's results, theresearchers said.

"The exclusion of so many patients may give one a more positiveimpression of this test than the data would allow," said Dr. FrankWitter, an associate professor of gynecology and obstetrics at theJohns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.

But while the test is not accurate enough to predict the exactmoment a woman will go into labor, it may give women a better idea ofwhen they will deliver when combined with other information, Wittersaid.

A New York expert said the test will be most useful in helpingto predict which women will go into premature labor. For instance, doctors could use the test to confirm their suspicions when theydetect signs of early labor.

"This study backs up earlier work that showed that fetalfibronectin can be detected in patients about to undergo laborearly," said Dr. Daniel M. Lasser, an assistant professor of medicinein the department of obstetrics and gynecology atColumbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.

"Despite all the advances in obstetrical care, very little hasbeen done in terms of preventing preterm labor," Lasser said. "Theonly thing that has advanced is care of the preterm baby."

If doctors can determine which women are at high risk of anearly delivery, they may be able to find ways to slow the process,Lasser said.

Inmate Pleads No Contest in Ark. Killing

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - A Montana prisoner pleaded no contest Tuesday in the killing of a New Jersey woman nearly seven years ago at a highway rest stop in central Arkansas.

Ronald James Ward, serving life in prison for another killing, was linked to the slaying of 25-year-old Kristin Laurite through DNA five years after she was stabbed, sexually assaulted and left to die at the rest stop in August 2000. He was charged with first-degree murder in May 2006.

Ward, 40, was arrested last year while in prison and returned to Arkansas for his court appearance Tuesday.

He initially told the court, while representing himself, that he would plead guilty. But Ward changed his plea after talking to a public defender, and the no-contest plea means he will not go to trial.

Ward changed his plea because he admitted responsibility in Laurite's death but said he couldn't remember it because he had been high on heroin, moonshine and cocaine, prosecutor Tom Tatum said.

Ward's lawyer, John Irwin, declined to discuss the case in detail, citing lawyer-client confidentiality.

Ward will be sentenced Thursday, and he agreed to a life term, Tatum said.

Laurite left her New Jersey home on her way to California for a new job at a day care center. By Aug. 25, 2000, she made it to Arkansas, stopping at the rest stop to splash water on her face and let her dogs play.

The next day, truckers noticed one of the dogs running loose. The trucker called the number on the dog's tag, finding Laurite's mother. The dogs led officers to her body, dragged down toward a pond.

Laurite's mother Lynn DiBenedetto expressed love for her daughter, and relief.

"Finally, justice will be served for the brutal murder of my daughter," DiBenedetto said in an e-mail to reporters. "Although the pain never goes away, I will finally get some peace of mind knowing that this alleged predator will never again be a part of society."

As officers led Ward away from his court appearance Tuesday, a television reporter asked him if he felt any remorse for Laurite's death. Ward nodded his head and his shoulders hitched as he began to cry.

Messier Tops List of 5 New Hall Members

Mark Messier aimed for championships during his 25-season career, not the Hall of Fame. "It wasn't something in Canada as a boy that we aspired to," Messier said. "Our big thing was pretending we were an NHL player and scoring the winning goal to win the Stanley Cup. That was the dream."

He lived it, time and time again. Six to be exact.

Messier netted the decisive goal in 1994 to end the Rangers' 54-year drought without a title. Add that to his legacy born in Edmonton with the Oilers, who won five times in seven years.

Forever known as "The Captain" in both places, his No. 11 hangs from the rafters in each city that claims Messier as its own. Now the player with the rock-solid jaw, and perhaps the greatest leader in all team sports, takes the next step.

Three years removed from his playing days, Messier will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto on Monday. The 46-year-old former center will be joined by defensemen Scott Stevens and Al MacInnis, forward Ron Francis and builder Jim Gregory, an NHL executive and former general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

"The four of them, that's a very special kind," said St. Louis Blues president John Davidson, also a former Rangers broadcaster. "I'm on the selection committee and I don't know why we had the meeting."

This class could be the one with the least debate.

Messier is second on the NHL points list with 1,887, trailing only longtime teammate Wayne Gretzky, who won four Stanley Cup titles with him in Edmonton then joined him for another season in New York.

Francis is fourth in points (1,798) while putting a face to the Hartford Whalers franchise. Stevens played more regular-season games than any other defenseman (1,635) and was fifth overall. MacInnis tallied 1,274 points, third among blue-liners.

"They all were great in their own game," Messier said. "Their professionalism, their commitment to being a professional on and off the ice. Real, real pros."

Messier faced MacInnis during the Battle of Alberta games between the Oilers and Calgary Flames in the '80s, calling the defenseman "the backbone of those teams." Stevens was the captain in New Jersey when the Devils and Rangers battled across the Hudson River the following decade.

The Rangers had to get through Stevens and the Devils in a classic seven-game series to advance to the 1994 finals.

"One of the toughest competitors I ever played against," Messier said. "As an opponent he was a guy that you had to know when he was on the ice."

No one ever lost track of Messier, either.

He dressed for 1,756 regular-season games with the Oilers, two stints with the Rangers and a tour with Vancouver between stops in New York.

"There are a tremendous amount of reasons why he's a Hall of Famer _ first of all his work ethic and passion for the game," Gretzky said. "He once said it best when he said there was nothing about the game he didn't like."

Counting the postseason, Messier scored 803 goals in an NHL-record 1,992 games. That puts him fourth behind Gretzky, Gordie Howe and Brett Hull.

What Messier cherishes, however, are the relationships forged from the time his parents took him to rinks in the early morning until the day he hung up his skates in 2004.

"It's not about looking that I scored so many goals and won six Stanley Cups, it's about the people that made it happen and the commitment," Messier said. "That's what, to me, drums up the emotion."

For all his toughness, Messier never was shy about letting tears flow. He cried when he returned to Madison Square Garden in 1997 with the Canucks, and when he re-signed with the Rangers in 2002. All signs point to more of the same Monday.

"I'm sure it will be emotional again," Messier said. "It cannot be after that many years and that many people being a factor."

Messier first visited the Hall of Fame in the early 1980s and has been back several times.

"I grew up with a healthy respect for the tradition of the game and all the players that came before me and what it meant for them to win the Stanley Cup," he said. "When I see the Hall of Fame, I see the players there that I am going to be shouldered up with."

Messier won four Cup titles with Gretzky before "The Great One" was traded to Los Angeles, then captured another in Edmonton when the team was truly his. He won two without Gretzky, but Gretzky never captured the Cup without Messier.

"We had fun together, we pushed each other and we made each other better players," Gretzky said. "And at the end of the day, we both benefited tremendously from that."

Messier came to New York with the charge of teaching the Rangers how to become champions and stopping the chants of "1940" that followed the club on many road stops as a reminder of the last time the team won a championship.

"I felt what I learned in Edmonton is about what it took to win," Messier said. "And the resources that the Rangers could provide, together we could somehow make it happen. I didn't realize all the challenges that are presented in a town like New York."

Messier, with his kids growing up, figures he'll return to the game in a management job, and maybe soon. For now, he can replay the glory years in his mind.

"The last few years have been a chance to reflect on everything," he said. "When you're playing you are just always in the moment. You don't have time or should you be looking at what you already did."

Gay rights advocates march on DC, divided on Obama

Thousands of gay and lesbian activists were expected to converge Sunday in a march from the White House to the Capitol, demanding that President Barack Obama keep his promises to push for civil rights protections from the federal government.

Some participants in the National Equality March woke up energized by Obama's blunt pledge to end the ban on gays serving openly in the military during a speech to the nation's largest gay rights group Saturday night. The president also said he would work to ban workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and to give same-sex couples the same civil rights as straight couples.

"I'm here with you in that fight," Obama said. He acknowledged some had grown impatient that he wasn't pushing for changes faster but urged advocates to continue pressing him and Congress to act.

Obama's political energies have been focused on two wars, the economic crisis and health care reform, though he pledged "unwavering" commitment even as he wrestled with those problems.

March organizer Cleve Jones, creator of the AIDS Memorial Quilt and a protege of gay rights pioneer Harvey Milk, said Obama stopped short of explaining when he would make good on his promises.

The march was scheduled to begin at noon near the White House. Unlike the first march in 1979 and others in 1987, 1993 and 2000 that included celebrity performances and drew as many as 500,000 people, Sunday's event was driven by grassroots efforts and was expected to be more low-key.

Many organizers were outraged after the passage of California's Proposition 8, which canceled the right of gays to get married in the state, and over perceived slights by the Obama administration.

By Friday, 75 busloads of people had confirmed they would be traveling to Washington, said march co-director Robin McGehee.

For Lt. Dan Choi, the day began with a jog around Washington's memorials, calling cadence at 8 a.m. with fellow veterans and supporters before joining the march. Choi, a West Point graduate, Arabic speaker and Iraq war veteran, is facing discharge under the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy for revealing in March that he is gay.

"We have fought in battles to protect our country, and now we are fighting at home for equal and full protection under the law," he said.

On Saturday, he led a group of gay veterans in laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery to honor gay and lesbian soldiers who have died in the line of duty.

The weekend also included political training at several D.C. universities for young activists to learn how to build support and lobby lawmakers at home.

Other veteran activists doubted the march would accomplish much. They said the time and money would have been better spent working to persuade voters in Maine and Washington state, where the November ballot will include a measure that would overturn a bill granting same-sex couples many of the benefits of marriage.

A bill introducing same-sex marriage in the nation's capital also was introduced last week by the District of Columbia Council and is expected to easily pass.

Rep. Barney Frank, an openly gay member of Congress, said the marchers should be lobbying their lawmakers. He said the demonstrations are simply "an emotional release" that do little to pressure Congress.

"The only thing they're going to be putting pressure on is the grass," the Massachusetts Democrat said Friday.

Finland provides Internet access to all

Finland has adopted a policy to provide Internet access as a legal right for all citizens in the sparsely populated country.

The minister of communications says that "a reasonably priced and high quality broadband connection will be everyone's basic right" as of Thursday.

Suvi Linden says that 26 telecom operators, "defined as universal service providers, must be able to provide every permanent residence and business office" with access to a connection with a downstream rate of at least 1 megabit per second.

Communications officials say 99 percent of all households in the nation of 5.3 million already have broadband access of at least 1Mbps.

Turkey's investigation of alleged coup plot widens

The allegations in Turkey's biggest legal case are the stuff of a dark thriller: mysterious murders, hit lists, stashed grenades, a plot to topple the government and, behind it all, a network of conspirators with links to the state as well as organized crime.

The arrest of 219 people in a sweeping, two-year investigation is part of a struggle for control in Turkey, where an elected government run by pious Muslims is undermining military-backed elites that owned the country after Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, a war hero, created a secular state out of chaos in 1923.

On March 10, prosecutors filed a second indictment in the case against Ergenekon, an ultranationalist gang that takes its name from a legendary valley in Central Asia believed to be the ancestral homeland of Turks.

Suspects include academics, journalists, businessmen, retired generals and a few active-duty officers, most of them known to be secular-minded foes of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

One of those detained on allegations of links to Ergenekon was Mustafa Balbay, the chief journalist in Ankara for Cumhuriyet, a secular newspaper critical of the government.

Reporters without Borders, a Paris-based group, said there was "so far no evidence" against Balbay amid concerns that prosecutors were casting their net too wide and could undercut their own credibility.

Prosecutors accuse suspects of seeking to foment chaos and compel the military to take over in a manner similar to past coups that ousted less stable, civilian governments. Ergenekon is seen as the remnants of the "deep state," a term for state-linked networks whose alleged murders and abductions peaked at the height of a Kurdish rebellion and Cold War-era rifts.

Hugh Pope, Turkey project director for the International Crisis Group, praised the push for "accountability" as overdue in a nation whose government has strong public support, but where the military remains a powerful, behind-the-scenes force in politics.

"This is very close to the bone in Turkey," Pope said. "Both sides are moving in such ways not to push the other one over the edge."

The military appears to be cooperating, and the justice minister recently visited the armed forces chief in what commentators interpreted as an attempt to smooth tension over questions about possible military involvement in the alleged conspiracy. Turkish media said the new indictment includes allegations that several military commanders plotted a coup in 2004.

Those allegations emerged in 2007 in Nokta, a weekly magazine that published excerpts from a diary that it said belong to Adm. Ozden Ornek, who retired. The diary reports on plans for coups codenamed "Blonde Girl" and "Moonlight" that were abandoned, partly because of a lack of support from other commanders.

Nokta closed soon after a police raid on its offices. Ornek denied he wrote the diary.

The Ergenekon gang is suspected in attacks on a newspaper and a courthouse, and plots to kill the prime minister and author Orhan Pamuk, Turkey's Nobel laureate. The crackdown led to the overnight detention last week of Mehmet Ulger, commander of paramilitary forces in Malatya when three members of a Christian publishing house were murdered there in 2007.

Ulger was interrogated, but not charged. A court ordered him not to leave Turkey, the Anatolia news agency reported.

The first, 2,455-page indictment was completed on July 10, 2008, more than a year after the probe was launched after the seizure of hand grenades at the Istanbul home of a noncommissioned officer. The second indictment seeks life in prison for two former generals, Hursit Tolon and Sener Eruygur, for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government.

Burhan Kuzu, a ruling party lawmaker and head of Parliament's Constitutional Commission, said he was shocked by the breadth of the alleged conspiracy, apparently aimed at creating an image of Turkey as ungovernable and at the mercy of Muslim extremists.

"The Ergenekon picture gives goosebumps," Kuzu said. "If these allegations are really based on evidence, then many unsolved murders will come to light."

The trial of Ergenekon suspects, which began in October, is part of a larger but limited effort to investigate crimes that may have involved state agents during more turbulent times. Authorities have begun digging at wells and other sites in southeastern Turkey in search of alleged mass graves of Kurds who went missing in the 1990s.

The ballooning size of the Ergenekon case has drawn accusations that the government is lumping political opponents together with genuinely suspicious characters in order to silence criticism that it seeks to impose Islam on society.

"You cannot lead an investigation by mixing what is true with what is imaginary. The judiciary cannot reach a healthy decision in this way," said Senal Sarihan, a prominent secularist lawyer.

Some aspects of the Ergenekon trial, including allegations of unauthorized wiretapping, sweeping charge sheets and large numbers of defendants recall similar mass cases against leftists and other dissidents after a 1980 military coup.

"Turkey has to be very wary of being seen to be going back to authoritarian ways," Pope said. "If it gets too broad, and it loses public support, then that's a bit of a threat to the process."

Hindu guru revered by millions

PUTTAPARTI, India — Hindu guru Sathya Sai Baba, revered by millions worldwide, died Sunday after nearly a month of hospital treatment near his southern Indian ashram. He was 84.

The news brought an outpouring of grief from his followers, including high Indian officials, who remembered him as a pious person who worked selflessly to help others through his charitable trust.

The Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, where Sai Baba spent the past weeks on breathing support and dialysis, appealed for calm. Police, heavily deployed since Sai Baba was hospitalized March 28, kept tight control over road traffic and crowds.

Sai Baba had a huge following, with ashrams in more than 100 countries and devotees in India including high-placed politicians, movie stars, world-class athletes and industrialists.

He was said to perform miracles, conjuring jewelry, Rolex watches and "vibhuti" — a sacred ash that his followers applied to their foreheads — from his halo of wild, frizzy hair.

But rationalist critics called him a charlatan and his miracles fake.

Hundreds of thousands are expected to pay last respects in Puttaparti, where a funeral with state honors is planned for Wednesday.

Sai Baba was said as a child to display spirituality and unusual intelligence. In 1940, at age 14, he declared himself an "avatar," or reincarnation, of another Hindu holy man, the Sai Baba of Shirdi.

As the young guru attracted followers, his home of Puttaparti grew from a sleepy village into a vibrant town with the sprawling "Prasanthi Nilayam" ashram built in 1950, as well as a large hospital, a university and schools run by his Satya Sai Central Trust, set up in 1972.

The trust, estimated to be worth at least $8.9 billion, also established spiritual centers in the cities of Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai. It built another hospital in Bangalore, where Sai Baba had a summer home.

Health woes over recent years had forced Sai Baba to cut down on public appearances.

Sai Baba was also mired in controversies, with several news reports about allegations of sexual abuse and fake miracles. He denounced the charges as vilification campaigns, although many of his followers broke with him.

Sai Baba was never married and has no children. AP

The healthy plate: Crunchy shrimp without the fryer

Don't you love those succulent shrimp with the crunchy, golden coconut coating? You know, the ones they have at all the big chain restaurants.

Did you know that a serving of four will set you back almost 600 calories and over 18 grams of fat? That's a third of most people's recommended daily fat and calorie intake.

No surprise, the main culprit in this dietary disaster is the deep fat fryer.

Coconut shrimp with dipping sauce from the March issue of Light & Tasty magazine employs a simple "oven frying" technique to rescue this dish from its oil-soaked origins. A serving of 10 shrimp with sauce has only 324 calories and 11 grams of fat.

On top of a flavor-boosting marinade, the secret to this recipe is a classic breading technique that uses flour, eggs, and Japanese breadcrumbs blended with shredded coconut. The shrimp are then baked instead of deep-fried, but still get that nice crunch.

To toast shredded coconut, spread it on a baking sheet and place it in an oven preheated to 350 F for 2 to 3 minutes until lightly browned.

Shrimp themselves are a healthy protein choice. A 3-ounce serving of uncooked shrimp has only about 90 calories and 1.5 grams of fat, very little of it saturated. Shrimp also provide iron, potassium, selenium, vitamin E and vitamin D. They even containsome omega-3 (heart-healthy) fat.

It's true that shrimp are high in cholesterol, but that's not a great concern, said D. Milton Stokes, a nutrition counselor in southern Connecticut, and spokesman for the American Dietetics Association. "Eating dietary cholesterol doesn't raise blood cholesterol as much as other constituents of the diet. Instead, consumers should watch out for trans fat and saturated fat - both are much more vicious than dietary cholesterol alone." AP

Coconut shrimp with dipping sauce

(Start to finish: 1 hour 30 minutes, 15 minutes active)

1 14-ounce can light coconut milk, divided

1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped

1 /4 cup minced fresh cilantro

1 1/4 pounds uncooked medium shrimp, peeled and de-veined, tails left on

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

4 egg whites

3/4 cup panko (Japanese) bread crumbs

3/4 cup flaked coconut, lightly toasted

1/3 cup reduced sugar apricot preserves

1 teaspoon spicy brown mustard

Preheat oven to 400 F.

Prepare a baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray

In a small bowl, place 2 tablespoons of the coconut milk; cover and refrigerate. In a large resealable plastic bag, combine remaining coconut milk, jalapeno, cilantro, and shrimp. Seal the bag and turn to coat. Refrigerate for 1 hour.

Place flour in a shallow bowl. In another bowl, lightly beat the egg whites. In a third bowl, combine breadcrumbs and coconut. Drain shrimp and discard marinade. Dip shrimp in flour and egg whites, then roll in crumb mixture.

Place shrimp on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 7 to 9 minutes on each side, 01 until lightly browned.

Meanwhile, for dipping sauce, combim preserves and mustard with the reserved coconut milk. Serve with shrimp.

CRUISING FOR A JACKPOT // Mississippi River fun and games aboard the new floating casinos

DAVENPORT, Iowa The nation's first licenses for riverboat gambling"may be as important as the Bill of Rights and the Magna Carta."

That wild flight of hyperbole by Bud Pike, chairman of the IowaRacing and Gaming Commission, drew a chorus of cheers at April Fool'sDay ceremonies in Davenport marking the maiden voyage of thePresident Riverboat Casino.

At the other end of the enthusiasm scale, the inaugural cruiseof the Dubuque Casino Belle was picketed by Phyllis J. Jones, aDubuque woman carrying a sign that read: "God doesn't like riverboatgambling."

Whether you'll like riverboat gambling aboard the three vesselsthat began plying the Mississippi on Monday from Davenport, Dubuqueand Bettendorf depends very much on the intensity of your passion forslot machines, blackjack tables and roulette wheels.

All three boats - the President, the Dubuque Casino Belle andthe Diamond Lady - are designed to leave no doubt that wagering isthe primary point of the cruise.

Though Iowa law limits the casinos to 30 percent of a vessel'sspace, my impression after sailing on the two Quad Cities boats andtouring the one in Dubuque is that the operators must have factoredthe engine room into their calculations of total area. They may havecounted the underside of the hull as well.

The casinos dominate the atmosphere aboard, more so on thePresident than its rivals. Outside the dining rooms, the mostspacious place to escape the ching-ching-ching of the slots is theopen top deck, which could be broiling on the hottest summer days.Interior lounges are small enough in some instances to look likegrudging afterthoughts.

The children's areas, supposedly a big part of the familyatmosphere that the Iowa vessels have been touting, can be found onlywith some serious sleuthing on the Quad Cities boats.

On the Diamond Lady last week, the youth area amounted tonothing more than three video games sharing a cramped room with somecoat racks. On the President, a half-dozen video games were tuckedbelow the main casino deck in a cluttered construction zone. Bothoperations say these facilities will be improved in the weeks ahead. The Dubuque Casino Belle's video-game and toy room, which has asupervisor on the scene, is more inviting.

If you're a non-gambling adult tempted to take a casino cruise,be prepared to risk boredom during the 2 1/2 to five hours on theriver. Outside the casinos, your choice of activities is pretty muchlimited to eating the buffet meal, taking in a bit of peripheralshow-lounge entertainment, browsing the gift shop, or watching theriver flow past.

The Dubuque Casino Belle appears to devote the most effort tolive entertainment, and it sails a more scenic stretch of theMississippi. Each of the boats plans to offer top-deck commentary onwhatever shoreline sights there are, as will two additional Iowacasino vessels coming on line later this spring in Clinton and FortMadison.

Shows and scenery hardly matter, of course, to the vast targetaudience of recreational gamblers. There were no complaints whenMonday's inaugural cruise of the President had to idle for two hoursin mid-river because high water kept it from passing under thenearest bridge. Most of the 950 passengers were too absorbed inslots, blackjack and other games of chance to notice that their boatwasn't going anywhere.

Despite Iowa's well-publicized limits of $5 per bet and $200 inindividual losses per cruise, the riverboat casinos do manage togenerate some of the Las Vegas hothouse atmosphere. Slot machinesgot the heaviest play on Monday, but there were also crowds at theblackjack and craps tables. The casino area seemed less crowded onthe President than aboard the smaller Diamond Lady.

One Las Vegas perk missing from the Iowa mix is free drinks forgamblers on the casino floor. While you're betting on the President, for example, you'll pay $1.25 for a beer and $2.25 for a glass ofwine.

Amateur photographers aboard the President and the DubuqueCasino Belle will welcome another switch from Las Vegas practice. Those two boats allow snapshots in the betting areas, though theDiamond Lady adheres to the more common ban on casino photos.

When choosing among the new riverboats, one consideration is thelength of their cruises. Shortest are those on the President, usually running 2 1/2 hours. That's half the length of the DubuqueCasino Belle's five-hour excursions. The Diamond Lady's are mostlyfour-hour sailings.

If you can't get enough of gambling, the top ticket is thePresident's "All Day Extravaganza" - four cruises totaling 10 1/2hours on the river (including breakfast, lunch and dinner), with atotal loss limit of $800.

At $67.90 on Fridays and Saturdays, that "All Day Extravaganza"is the most expensive of the various riverboat packages. Cheapest isthe Diamond Lady's $7.95 morning cruise without breakfast.

Meals aboard all three boats are served buffet style. Aninaugural-day sampling found them ample and as decently prepared ascan be expected for mass-feeding menus. Starting in mid-April, thePresident will offer the option of dining before or after a cruise inits dockside President's River Club, a setting distinctly moreelegant than the dining rooms on the boat.

The River Club, part of the new President's Landing complex onthe Davenport waterfront, also has a sizable dance floor and severallounges where live music will be played. Steamboat Casino RiverCruises, which owns the Diamond Lady, is developing Steamboat Landingshore facilities in Bettendorf, with a motorhome park scheduled toopen in July and a factory-outlet mall planned for next year.

Devout souvenir hunters will find the most action in the eightshops at the nearly completed dockside visitor center being built atDubuque's Ice Harbor by Roberts River Rides for its Dubuque CasinoBelle.

One novel item sold on the President and the Diamond Lady isbottled Genuine Mississippi River Water, "absolutely guaranteed tocontain Mississippi mud." The price is $6.60, and proceeds go to anonprofit student-exchange program. The President's gift kiosks alsooffer a Las Vegas-style wall clock with red dice marking the hours($24.95) and books of gambling advice (among them, How to Win atGambling and Beat the Odds).

All three operations expect the Chicago area to be their singlelargest market, and all say that advance reservations are essential.Bookings have been running so strong that some weekend cruises arealready sold out. You're likely to find a much better choice ofdates in the middle of the week.

And whether you love or loathe the notion of riverboat gambling, there's little doubt that the floating casinos already are changingthe face of tourism in the Midwest - and the pace of life in theirhome ports along the Mississippi.

One first-day gambler, Mary Tierney of Davenport, told a QuadCity Times reporter after losing $20 in the President's slotmachines: "This is not the Quad Cities. On a Monday like this, Ishould be home doing the wash."

Errors by Thomas hurt Sox 2 wayward throws sour first-base experiment in road loss to Royals

Royals 9

White Sox 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo.--The idea was to let Frank Thomas play first baseto provide a distraction to his slow offensive start.

Sunday at Kauffman Stadium, it just became distracting.

Thomas delivered his first home run, but also had two throwingerrors in a 9-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals.

After Friday night's loss to the Royals, manager Jerry Manuel feltplaying Thomas in the field would keep his designated hitter active, ideally getting him to worry less about mechanics at the plate. A 14-0 victory Saturday sure looked good, but all Thomas contributed was abloop single.

The experiment continued for a second day Sunday, but withdisappointing results.

I'm not coming in here expecting to be in there every day, but thelast couple of days he's thrown me in there," Thomas said. [Saturday]it worked to perfection. [Sunday] we got burned."

Thomas' first error came when the Sox had Michael Tucker pickedoff first base. Thomas took a pickoff throw from pitcher ToddRitchie. While trying to get Tucker running to second, Thomas plunkedhim in the shoulder with the throw.

Thomas' second error came when he fielded a sacrifice bunt byDonnie Sadler and flipped the ball past Ray Durham, who was coveringfirst base.

We picked a guy off first and he made a good throw, it justhappened to hit the guy," Manuel said. That's all you can ask for onthat particular play. On the bunt, he probably would have been wiseto let it go foul."

Sadler eventually scored the second run of a six-run seventhinning that put the game out of reach. But since the play was ruled ahit (the error came because Sadler advanced to second), all the runsin the inning were earned.

All six runs in the inning were charged to the bullpen, one toDamaso Marte and five to Antonio Osuna, who faced six batters and gotjust one out. After two successful games by the bullpen, therelievers returned to the form they displayed in Seattle, when theyblew two games and nearly blew a third.

We called down there and [Osuna] mentioned that he was ready, butmaybe he wasn't quite ready to come into the game at that time,"Manuel said. It will take him a while to get used to what he's doingdown there because of the [shoulder] surgery. I think we'll be fine."

Gary Glover allowed one hit in 12/3 innings, but that hit--adouble by Joe Randa--allowed all three of his inherited runners toscore.

We left Glover out there just to get some work to see if he canget his stuff together," Manuel said. He seemed to have a littleexplosion on the ball at the end there so that's a good thing."

The lack of offense and struggles by the bullpen spoiled anotherdecent outing by Ritchie, who allowed three runs and four hits in 52/3 innings. In his Sox debut last week in Seattle, Ritchie yieldedthree runs in six innings, getting a no decision.

Everybody wants to get the win," Ritchie said. Sometimes theydon't work out like you want them to. It's a long season. You have tokeep a good mind-set."

Ritchie has a reason to stay positive. His record is 0-0. Lastseason with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he opened 0-8.

I don't want to go through that again," Ritchie said. It wasn'tfun, but I don't think I'm going to panic. Sometimes you get thebreaks and sometimes you don't. It seems that early in the year, Idon't get the breaks. I don't know what it is."

Tom Barrett, the White House's deputy pipeline coordinator, told members of the Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday that the federal government likes the proposed pipeline that would span Alaska and much of Canada. He said labor markets need it, environmentalists can stomach it and North American natural gas markets can handle it.

"The biggest market for natural gas in the world is the United States," Barrett said.

ZELLWEGER'S RISE HAS DOWNSIDE.(PREVIEW)

NEW YORK -- If Renee Zellweger was clinging to any last vestige of privacy, the past few months obliterated it. She revealed song-and-dance chops in ``Chicago,'' earning an Academy Award nomination for best actress. That came on top of critical huzzahs for 2001's ``Bridget Jones's Diary,'' in which she delivered a credible British accent. Now she cloaks herself in Jackie O. glamour and Doris Day spunk in the retro comedy ``Down With Love.''

Zellweger planned to celebrate her ascent by uprooting from Los Angeles to New York, but that was before a magazine printed a picture and address of her new digs.

Ramirez HR in 11th lifts Cubs over Rockies

Aramis Ramirez hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning, his first home run in more than a month, lifting the Chicago Cubs to a 4-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Monday night.

Starlin Castro opened the 11th with his third hit of the game, a single off Matt Belisle (1-1). After Derrek Lee lined out, Ramirez lined a 1-0 pitch through a stiff wind into the left-field bleachers.

Ramirez, who also drove in Chicago's first run with a first-inning single, has been in a season-long slump. Even after the two-hit game, he is batting only .175 after hitting .300 in his first seven seasons with the Cubs.

Coffee and cholesterol. (Research Review)

Coffee and cholesterol

Coffee is back in the news again but this time it's not caffeine that is to blame. Several cross-sectional studies have found a relationship between coffee consumption and risk of death from coronary heart disease (CHD). Some of the earlier studies did not take into account other risk factors such as smoking habits and high blood pressure. However, a study of American doctors has shown that heavy coffee consumption is associated with a threefold increased risk of death from CHD, even when adjustments were made for initial cholesterol concentration, blood pressure and smoking habits. Moreover, it correlated well with the most recent estimates of coffee consumption. Similar findings were reported in the Tromso Heart Study.

BRUNO PUSHES FOR BAN ON LATE ABORTIONS.(MAIN)

Byline: TOM PRECIOUS Capitol bureau

ALBANY -- Less than two weeks after President Clinton vetoed a bill to ban a rarely used procedure for late-stage abortions, the state Senate is poised to pass essentially the same measure today.

Facing what some senators said was pressure from the Catholic Church and other Christian groups, the Senate's Republican leaders moved Tuesday to rush the bill to the floor before lawmakers wrap up this week's session later this afternoon.

The procedure is used about 400 times a year nationwide, according to medical groups. It has provoked sharp division, with some physicians and women's groups saying it is sometimes medically necessary and abortion opponents calling it murder.

Abortion rights advocates were caught off guard Tuesday as word spread that the Senate was planning swift action. But lobbying quickly became frantic late in the day. Several senators said privately that they …

Agro-morphological characterization of durum wheat accessions using pattern analysis.(Report)

Introduction

Genetic variability present in collection and preserved germplasms are important resource in generating new plant ideotypes having desired traits that help to increase crop production and thus improve the level of human nutrition (Singh, 1991). The germplasms of diverse plant species are maintained in gene banks around the world with collections holding anywhere from hundreds to thousands of accessions (IBPGR, 1992). Together with the important role of conserving genetic resources, gene banks also provide accessions for incorporation into plant breeding programs to develop new cultivars of crop and pasture species (Shands and Wiesner, 1992). In breeding programs, characterization of accessions based on multiple traits can be used as a management tool in regenerations to allow validating the identity of an accession. Evaluation data is used when searching the bank for useful or sets of useful germplasm (Delacy et al., 2000). Studies of the variation present in germplasm collections have been carried out frequently using characterization of plant morphological attributes for white clover (Caradus et al., 1990; Jahufer et al., 1997; Rosso and Pagano, 2001), alfalfa (Rumbaugh et al., 1988), wheat (Pecetti, 1992), white lupin (Rubio et al., 2004), Fenugreek (McCormick et al., 2009), apricot (Ruiz and Egea, 2008), watermelon (Szamosi et al., 2009), sesame (Morris, 2009), safflower (Elfadl et al., 2010) and vineyard peach (Nikolic et al., 2010). Germplasm collections continue to play a vital role in providing the genetic resources needed for improving durum wheat. The ICARDA gene bank preserves more than 19600 accessions of durum wheat (including 15,020 accessions of landraces), 849 accessions of primitive wheats, 1585 accessions of wild Triticum and 301 accessions of Aegilops species with S genome (out of 1905 accessions of Aegilops). CIMMYT gene bank has also large number of accessions including 14,835 accessions (36% of which is breeding material of T. durum and accessions of T. diccoccom and T. carthlicum). Iran national gene bank holds a unique set of landraces of durum wheat (700 accessions) and wild relatives collected mainly within the country. International centers, annually collect, regenerate and conserve the genetic resources and they also evaluate and compare the morphological characteristics of accessions in a common environment. In fact, these aspects of breeding programs are conducted throughout the target region every year in which multiple traits are usually recorded. Effective interpretation and utilization of these breeding programs data is important at all stages of plant breeding, particularly when it is only possible to select on yield components. Numerous methods have been used to understand of the data patterns, although strategies may differ in overall appropriateness, different methods usually lead to the same or similar conclusions for a given dataset (Flores et al., 1998; Rubio et al. , 2004). Different statistical procedures, ranging from simple univariate to the more complex multivariate techniques, have been used in the analysis of characterization data in the germplasm collection. Although statistics such as means, ranges and variances are helpful in providing information on the diversity of accessions in germplasm collections, they do not enable the simultaneous comparison of the accessions and the plant attributes (Harch et al., 1995). Pattern analysis techniques such as clustering and ordination, have been used extensively to study the diversity among accessions for various plant species (Harch et al., 1995; Harch et al., 1996; Jahufer et al., 1997; DeLacy et al., 2000; Rosso and Pagano, 2001). In addition to clustering technique, the genotype-by-trait (GT) biplot has been applied to study relation among studied traits in a set of genotypes (Yan and Rajcan, 2002; Rubio et al., 2004; Peterson et al., 2005; Yan and Fregeau-Reid, 2008). It is an application of the GGE (genotype plus genotype-by-environment) biplot technique to study of the genotype-by-trait data, and to examine its usefulness in visualizing crop trait relationships, and its application in genotype evaluation comparison, and selection (Yan and Rajcan, 2002). However, little is known about the characterization of durum wheat accessions maintained in the gene bank of Iran based on a large number of qualitative and quantitative traits as well as the interrelationships among the traits which are more affect on genotype discrimination. More information, however, is needed to find out adapted accessions that are suitable for durum wheat breeding program in Iran. Therefore, the main objectives of this investigation were to (i) evaluate 85 durum wheat accessions on the basis of multiple agro-morphological traits which could be used to describe the genetic variation of a subset of accessions from several countries preserved in Iran's national gene bank and (ii) study the relationships among recorded traits using biplot analysis techniques.

Materials and Methods

Plant Materials

Genetic materials consisted of 85 durum wheat accessions maintained at the national gene bank of SPII (Seed and Plant Improvement Institute), Karaj, Iran. The accessions studied were collections from 11 countries worldwide (Supplementary 1). Four out of 85 accessions were the check cultivars (Vee/Nac and Soissons as bread wheat checks, Dena and Zardak as durum wheat checks). The field experiment was carried out under irrigated conditions at the research station of SPII (ordination: latitude 35' 48[degrees] N; longitude 51' 10[degrees] E, altitude 1321 m) in north central Iran during the cropping season 2008-09. The plant materials were sown in 2 rows of 2.5 m long in a non-replicated trial. The checks were repeated every 10 genotypes, intervally. Weeds were controlled manually. Fertilizer application was 135 kg N [ha.sup.-1] and 90 kg [P.sub.2][O.sub.5] [ha.sup.-1] at planting.

The traits recorded

Durum wheat accessions were examined for (i) five qualitative traits, i.e., seed color (SC), glume color (GC), lodging (Lg), leaf type (LT) and shriveled seed (SS) (Supplementary 1) and (ii) fourteen quantitative traits, i.e., days to heading (DH), plant height (PH), 1000-kernel weight (TKW), weight of seeds per spike (WSS), number of seeds per spike (NSS), number of spikelet per spike (NSPS), sterile spiklet number (SSPN), spike length (SL), number of nodes (NN), stem thickness (ST), peduncle length (PL), number of effective tillers (NET), chlorophyll rate (Chl) and grain yield (YLD) per plot (Supplementary 2).

Statistical analysis

Several simple univariate statistics including minimum, maximum, means, ranges and standard deviation (SD) were used to describe the variability among the accessions, which were obtained for each trait based on the accessions (Maggs-Kolling et al., 2000; Prosperi et al., 2006; Morris, 2009). Coefficients of variation (CV %) (Francis and Kannenberg, 1978) was also calculated from the variance components and the overall means for all the investigated traits. Combination of the mean and SD for each attribute was also used to identify superior accessions. In this case five categorizes of accessions for each attribute can be characterized. The accessions with values > (mean + SD) and > (mean + 2SD) can be identified as desirable accessions for each attribute. The accessions with values between mean [+ or -] SD are average in their performance, and those with values < (mean - SD) and < (mean - 2SD) can be identified as undesirable ones (Shakhatreh et al., 2010). This simple methodology can be useful to preliminary selection of desirable accessions base on each attribute. Pattern analysis, defined by Williams (1976) as the joint use of classification and ordination methods, was applied to characterization of durum wheat accessions. This approach attempts to identify accessions that have similar performance for a set of traits, and the traits that have similar pattern for discriminating among genotypes. Clustering of accessions based on the morphological traits was carried out using an agglomerative hierarchical clustering procedure with squared Euclidean distance as a measure of dissimilarity and incremental sums of squares (Ward, 1963) as a grouping strategy. Dendrograms were constructed on the basis of fusion level to examine similarities in pattern of performance among accessions (in reaction to morphological …
