Coffee and cholesterol
Coffee is back in the news again but this time it's not caffeine that is to blame. Several cross-sectional studies have found a relationship between coffee consumption and risk of death from coronary heart disease (CHD). Some of the earlier studies did not take into account other risk factors such as smoking habits and high blood pressure. However, a study of American doctors has shown that heavy coffee consumption is associated with a threefold increased risk of death from CHD, even when adjustments were made for initial cholesterol concentration, blood pressure and smoking habits. Moreover, it correlated well with the most recent estimates of coffee consumption. Similar findings were reported in the Tromso Heart Study.
