NSW: Newcastle workers rally in support of Maintrain workers
More than 400 Newcastle workers will rally today in support of Maintrain workers in
Sydney who have been on strike for seven weeks.
Australian Manufacturing Worker's Union state secretary PAUL BASTIAN says workers from
various Newcastle worksites will march to the Newcastle head office of Goninans, the parent
company of Maintrain.
He says the rally will show there is huge support from workers all over the country.
About 250 Maintrain workers walked off the job seven weeks ago after management refused
to protect their long service leave, holiday pay and other entitlements.
Yesterday former prime minister BOB HAWKE was called in to mediate a solution to the
dispute but the talks wound up without result last night.
Mr BASTION says the talks will resume at State Rail's Sydney headquarters at 11am (AEST) today.
