Clearly, the instantly iconic SLS AMG is more than a nod to Mercedes-Benz's storied past. Indeed, the new Gullwing is already serving as a halo for the future, and its genetics are evident on the 2012 SLK sports car.

A promotional video of the retractable hardtop offers clear views and more than a few clues to the demeanor of the redesigned SLK. The SLS styling is especially apparent in the head- and taillights, the stretched grille and the vents on the front quarter-panels.

The SLK gets an optional glass roof that can change from clear to dark ("Glass Ceiling," AW, Oct. 25, 2010) and onboard Internet access--both firsts for Mercedes.
